Meet Baba Ram Rahim – Rock Star. Saint. Murderer. Motorbike Customizer. Political Leader
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the Guru of Bling.
Rock star, actor, saint, murderer, motorbike customizer, castrator, rapist, political leader – the full story –
Few Gurus have ever been as rock and roll as Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, also known as Guru of Bling.
No-one ever rode better motorcycles, starred and produced kitscher action movies, performed so many rock concerts and guided biggest riots from jail.
Only a few other Gurus castrated or raped similar numbers of followers, befriended and influenced one of the most powerful presidents in the world, murdered oppositors, and ended up serving a lifetime jail sentence.
You might have seen him before, often mentioned as the “motorcycle guru of India”. But probably you don’t know his story, and that’s a story worth knowing.
Born one 15 August 1967 in a village in the Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, at the age of seven he was initiated to the Dera Cult by is father, a local landlord. Somehow, 23 years later he became the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) sects.

But first, let’s take a step back.
The Origins of the Dera Sacha Sauda Cult
Who would know that they we’ll end up in massive street fights with the Sikh themselves just a few decade later?
As an indian religious sect, the Dera Sacha Sauda didn’t start so eccentric: coming from the scission of a previous large organization, a guy called Mastana Balochistani founded an Ashram in 1948.
He was apparently pretty successfull at his job and expanded in Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan with an impressive score of 25 Ashrams in only 12 years.
There he taught the Naam method of Meditation, a Sikh practice which basically consists of vocal singing and contemplating the various Names of God (or qualities of God), especially the chanting of the word Waheguru, “Wonderful Lord”.
…Who would know that they’ll end up in massive street fights with the Sikh themselves just a few decades later? (wait, what do you know about Sikhism? Should we write about it or you wanna go to wiki?)
The followers had to accepted only three principles for the rest of their life: No consumption of meat, egg or gelatin, no consumption of drugs (alchol and tobacco included), and no adultery or illicit sex.
Soft conservative shit if you think at what become of it, castration wasn’t even mentioned… no trace of rape also but there were not many such cases filed in India at the time.
The Rise of Guru of Bling
In this Dark Age aka Kal Yuga, evil is at the very peak in society. A Savior of Humanity, His Holiness, Shah Mastana Ji Maharaj incarnated himself, thus, and founded a Socio-Spiritual organization which we today call the Dera Sacha Sauda…
When succession time came at the head of the cult, Ram Rahim Singh wasn’t among the candidates, his ascent took everyone by surprise.
The 23-years-old Gurmeet took the Place of Real Truth (Dera Sacha Sauda) by a storm, revolutionizing the way of spreading God’s True words and the True Method of Meditation.
Gurmeet Rahim’s new style consisted of an explosive mix of Guinness World Records for humanitarian works (18), thousands of meditation meetings in the form of rock concerts, 11 musical albums, and 5 action movies.
A mix that worked pretty well in last decades India, gaining him 23 new Ashrams, and about 5 million followers (he once claimed 60), including devotes all around the world.
These impressive numbers and mediatic skills earned him the 96th place in the list of the 100 most powerful Indians of 2015 (according to The Indian Express), not a bad rank in a country of 1.3 billion people.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh does Good Stuff
If you already watched some of his videos, you can certainly tell this man is no ordinary dude. He likes to make it big, also when it comes to what he calls welfare activities or miracles:
he runs 3 hospitals and 13 educational institutes
organized 30 Mega Cleanliness Campaigns in several states of India
established a specialized disaster relief and welfare agency (who helped in the aftermath of the Odisha cyclone and Gujarat earthquake
crusaded against drugs, alcohol, and prostitution
spoken out against cattle slaughter in India (?)
Among Guru of Bling Guinness World Records are:
Most Cardiac Echo Tests taken in 24 hours
Most blood pressure readings
Most cholesterol readings
Most diabetes readings
All of Ram Rahim’s followers have adopted “Insan” (“human”) as a surname.
The 24 hours an ordinary human spends with a single profession and chores, Dr. MSG is tirelessly and successfully working with all His potential for the growth of Dera Sacha Sauda to reach out to millions of people and help them in being ‘humans’ . He is an Engineer, an incredible farmer, an actor, director, photographer, choreographer, leader, and many many more. It’s Him working really hard for the whole humanity and the same teachings are given by Him to all his followers.
Ram Rahim’s artistic career exploded in 2012, in 5 years he produced the most flamboyant music videos, gathered millions of spectators/followers at his spiritual-rock events, and crushed the box offices with his movies.
All of his artistic career has always been degraded for being a vehicle of propaganda, but still he produced the most memorable stuff.
Baba Rahim Singh is usually credited in his films as actor, director, writer, songwriter, as well as various other roles, sometimes more than forty departments.
Conspiracies about his own assassination were obsessing the Guru also in his first movie, MSG The Messanger.
Here the Baba basically interprets himself, a spiritual leader with huge follower base eradicating social evils such as drugs and gender-related issues. The apathic elite conspires to kill him.
In the sequel, he converts a tribe of primitive terrorists and saves them from the evil – while with The Warrior Lion Heart (2016) things get more sci-fi.
It’s the story of a medieval warrior fighting against aliens for the honour of his land.
The story travels centuries apart as he emerges in another role as a modern Indian equivalent of James Bond, a stylish top secret agent. The marauding aliens run amok, as they are hundreds of years ahead in technology. Lionheart is their only stumbling block in their march to overpower planet Earth.
MSG: The Warrior Lion Heart is probably the apex of Baba Rahim’s career, A number of world and regional records were organised by the sect leader to promote the film.
According to Guinness World Records, MSG fans assembled the world’s largest poster, which covered 15,123.8 square metres (162,791 sq ft) – the movie smashed the box offices with ₹176.7 million gross income.
His third opera, based on the 2016 Uri attack and 2016 India–Pakistan military confrontation, was instead kind of a flop – while the last one, the horror-comedy Jattu Engineer, was released in May 2017, just before his arrest.
It was perhaps a final attempt for Baba Ram Rahim to avoid his destiny, indeed the propaganda here is all towards’s President Modi’s dream project.
Rock Star Guru
All 6 records Baba Rahimji records (2012 – 2014) have been produced by Universal, his last fatigue, Highway Love Charger, the album sold 3 million copies in the first three days while the music video became an instant hit on YouTube.
Since when Guru Rahim Singh went into cinema in 2015, his sound work have been only movie soundtracks. MSG: The Messanger became the first Indian in rec ord in a decade to Receive a Platinum IFPI (1 million copies sold in Europe.
MSG: The Warrior Lion Heart‘s second song was unveiled in live concert amidst 3.6 million fans, number sot unusual for this cult leader.
From Untouchable Dalits to President Modi
Ram Rahim’s army of followers at his Dera is over 70% Dalits, individuals below the system of the casts, untouchable, the lowest of the lowest… but although to be born a Dalit in nowadays India is still a curse, they can vote.
Gurmeet’s Dera Sacha Sauda is the only one among the various Deras that openly asks its supporters to vote for particular political parties.
His son, Jasmeet, is married to a daughter of the Indian National Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi.
The Bling originally supported the Indian National Congress and aided them in winning some provinces in the 2007 Punjab state elections.
In 2012 Punjab state elections, the Congress leader Amarinder Singh and his family visited Ram Rahim, asking to extend his support to Congress.
But that wasn’t a good move, as it alienated the votes of Sikhs… yes because Sikhs hate the Guru of Bling, but that’s another story.
Between 2013 and 2015, the Guru helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of leader Narendra Modi in winning state and national elections, he apparently had over 2 million followers in Delhi, while 3,000 Dera followers campaigned for BJP in the state of Bihar.
When Modi became president of India in 2014, he was pretty friendly with Gurmeet, having praised him numerous times publicly.
In 2016, the Haryana sports minister announced a ₹5 million grant to the Dera for promoting sports, in Ram Rahim’s presence. The fact called for scandal, Ram Rahim’s parabole was already declining, and pretty fast… a use and throw away case? You don’t get that for free with the Bling.
The fall of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
Judiciary troubles where hanging over Rahim’s holy head like a Damocles sword for 15 years, when on a dark night of the year 2002…
Wait but what about the Sikhs? All right, even though I think most want to quickly get to the castration shit, here’s a short account of…
Guru of Bling’s Mess with the Sikhs
This is also interesting, as it involves bearded gurus in cosplay and loads of old fashioned sacred street fights… plus bombs.
In May 2007, Ram Rahim was accused of hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikhs by allegedly cosplaying the tenth and final living Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh in an advertisement campaign.
According to Sikhs, wearing a turban with a kalgi (egret feather) is enough to outrage him.
The Gurmeet followers organized a demonstration against their alleged persecution. Then Ram Rahim was attacked by a mob on 16 July 2007, but daringly escaped unhurt amidst flying stones (thanks also to teargas).
The Dera Sacha Sauda tendered multiple apologies, regretting confusion over the dress, and stated that it had high regard for all Sikh Gurus, Sikh religion and all of humanity. But that was deemed inadequate.
Dera’s followers were accused of staging suicide attacks, against Sikh communities, the Dera responded that it was being targeted by a conspiracy of powerful political groups.
On 2 February 2008, during one of the crowded Ram Rahim’s “cavalcades“, where he usually rode his iconic motorcycles, some guys from a truck threw a tire stuffed with explosives at one of the cars, which burst into flames, eleven persons where injured.
A Khalistan Liberation Force member was later arrested and confessed to arranging explosives and executing the plan along with his associates.
Ram Rahim still had some friends up, so he was given top state security protection, second only to the president. 55 armed operatives, 10 NSG commando members, plus police support, one of only 36 individuals in the whole India with such an escort.
The war between Sikhs and Dera followers went on in malls, and streets of India for years, the deaths were several, and the injuries hundreds.
Only in 2015, the Sikh leaders accepted his apology and pardoned him, but, resentment and protest sparked among Sikhs, so the pardon was revoked.
The Guru of Bling decided to change the target and performed a cosplay of Hindu God Vishnu.
Rape, Murder and Castration
An Harem for the Maharaj
So, on a dark night of the year 2002…
around 10 pm I had been summoned to ‘Gufa’ (residence of Gurmeet Ram Rahim). As I was going there for the first time, I was elated that God himself had sent out for me. When I went upstairs, I saw Maharaj sitting on the bed holding a remote control in hand and watching a blue film on TV. Beside his pillow on the bed, lay a revolver.
This is an extract from the letter that destroyed the Guru of Bling, bringing him to his first jail sentence. This anonymous missive was published by Mr Chhatrapati in his Hindi-language newspaper Poora Sach – The Complete Truth.
Five days after he published the article, on 24 October 2002, he was shot outside his home.
When he died, less than a month later, the letter had already sparked a major investigation into abuse at the sect.
Maharaj took me in his arms and said that he loved me from the core of his heart. He also said that he wanted to make love with me. He told me that at the time of becoming his disciple, I had dedicated my wealth, body and soul to him and he had accepted my offering. By this logic, your body is mine now.
When she objected he said, “There is no doubt that I am God.” adding that also Krishna too was God and he had 360 gopis (milkmaids) with whom he staged Prem Lila (love drama). Even then people regarded him as God. This is not a new thing.
Then he went into the threats
I can kill you with this revolver and cremate you here. The members of your family are my devoted followers and they have such blind faith in me that they are my slaves.
According to the anonymous accuser he went on bragging about his political connections with the chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana, that the central Ministers touched his feet.
That he could kill her family like he killed the Dera manager Fakir Chand. They cannot take any action against me… they did at the end, but it took 15 years.
Thus, he raped me. For the past three months, my turn comes every 25-30 days. Now, I realise that he has been raping other girls staying with him.
Around 35-40 women living at the Dera are over 35-40 years old and past the marriageable age. They have compromised with their lives at the Dera. […] We appear like devis (pious women), but our situation is that of prostitutes […] I am helpless. I have to obey every command of the Maharaj.
Girls were not permitted to talk to one another or to their families if a girl was to talk about the reality of the Dera, she was punished under the commands of the Maharaj.
The letter finished with an invitation to examine the integrity of the follower’s genitals… but it turned out it wasn’t only the girls who were violated.
Cut Your Balls and Ascent
I had first met Hansraj in 2012. In the five years since, his appearance had changed considerably. He seemed to have put on a lot of weight and had little trace of facial hair. ‘It’s all the effect of castration. […] he said
In 1996, Hansraj moved to the Deramain Ashram in Sirsa. He had a natural flair for music and soon became a popular bhajan singer and musician at the Dera, so appreciated by Gurmeet that he made him the head of sound system management. A very important job, as we know.
‘In 1999, some other sadhus and I came to know of an experiment of castration on a horse at the Dera. The animal died after three months.’ […] He heard that the chief had decided to conduct the same experiment on humans. […] In late 1999, the chief called a meeting of 500 sadhus at the Dera headquarters.
During that meeting, the sadhus were told that they had to go through a minor, painless surgery which would bring them ‘directly in touch with God’.
‘Those who agreed to go through the surgery at that time did not exactly know what it was all about. They were treated royally that day,’ Hansraj recalls. Those who refused to comply were humiliated and abused by Gurmeet. Some were even sent to the torture room and beaten up for days.
The castration was first performed on five close aides of Gurmeet, including his personal cook. They were to tell the other sadhus that the surgery had led their mind to a higher realm of spirituality and they could now communicate directly with the Supreme Power because of their enhanced powers of concentration.
At the chief’s directions, the castrated sadhus conducted meetings with eighteen to twenty young sadhus on a regular basis in an attempt to brainwash them and make them believe that the surgery would miraculously transform their lives.
Hansraj was then seventeen years old, when he was told “you’ve been blessed”, and was invited to Gurmeet’s hospital at Gurusar Modia, where most castrations where performed. He was welcomed with a cold drink.
my head started spinning and I began to hallucinate. Soon, I fell unconscious, to wake up three days later
This pattern of selecting young boys and sending them to be castrated continued for a long time. With the number of castration followers increasing, keeping it secret became difficult.
Soon, most of the sadhus at the Dera became aware of it. Some tried to flee to avoid it. Those who were caught trying to escape were beaten up and put in the torture room for days.
So 2002 was a great year for Ram Rahim, not only he had a harem, but he also had proper eunuchs, per Hansraj’s own estimate, more than two hundred.
They could neither marry nor procreate. They would soon start looking more like women than men, and if they left the Dera, society would not accept them. They should therefore pledge their complete allegiance to him, and give him complete control over their lives and deaths. […] they should do whatever assignment they were given without question, even if it involved dying or killing.
The Biggest Riot in India… Ever
Tens of thousands of angry followers of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh — who calls himself the “Guru of Bling” — forced a lockdown in cities in northern India on Friday, after a court convicted the guru of raping two of his followers. Local media report that at least 28 people have died in the unrest.
What was about to happen will be remembered as the 2017 Northern India Riots, arguably the most violent mass protest since the indepence of India.
Before the verdict, the government had deployed a heavy contingent of security: 16 Rapid Action Force; 37 Sashastra Seema Bal; 12 Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and 21 Border Security Force companies – plus another 10 companies kept on standby.
The authorities had suspended internet services for 48 hours and Section 144 of the Indian penal code (prohibiting an assembly of more than four people) was imposed in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan (Ram Rahim’s birth-village) in advance of the verdict announcement. Electricity was cut in a few residential areas in Panchkula as a precautionary measure.
The verdict came, guilty – at least 14 years of jail. Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the seizure of all sect’s property and Rahim, the 50-year-old motorcycle-riding head of Dera Sacha Sauda, was flown out of Panchkula in a government helicopter.
His supporters went on a rampage, they took to streets with rocks and clubs setting fire to vehicles, government buildings, petrol stations, media vans, and railway stations – a PTC News reporter went missing, at least 38 person were killed and more than 300 injured during the first the assault.
My legal day of reckoning would be bloody
Ram Rahim Singh
By 7:00 pm the violence subsided in Panchkula. According to Haryana’s Director General of Police, some 10,000 followers of Ram Rahim remained holed up in the DSS headquarters.
The Indian army was called in and about 600 soldiers were deployed in the city of Panchkula to help restore order. Curfews were imposed in several areas across the state of Punjab, almost 250 trains were cancelled – nationwide measures were taken, including in the capital Dehli.
More than 1,000 of the guru’s supporters were arrested. The Police found AK 47, mousers, pistols, rifles, petrol bombs, and 85 cartons of explosives used to make fireworks in the Dera grounds.
According to Secretary Dhesi, all the 36 people killed on 25 August were Dera Sacha Sauda followers, who were killed by police gunfire and stampedes.
Some lawyers objected to the use of lethal bullets by police, but the High Court bench rejected the plea because mobs armed with petrol bombs and other weapons had created a war-like situation.
Murder Conviction and Lifetime Jail
On 17 January 2019, Ram Rahim was sentenced to life imprisonment by Special CBI Court along with three other men involved.
The testimony of his former personal driver, a member of the higher circle whose sister was probably sexually exploited by the Guru, was decisive in the final verdict. He admitted, after years of denial, of being with Baba Ram Rahim when he commanded the homicide of Mr Chhatrapatio.
Ram Rahim challenged his murder conviction in the Punjab and Haryana High Courts on 15 March 2019. He is still the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda, which still counts million of followers all over the world.
